    NEWater Demineralized Water Filter System

    Demineralization is the process of removing mineral salts from water through the use of an ion-exchange process. Demineralized water is water that is completely free (or almost free) of dissolved minerals, and NEWater’s commonly used method is the economical and practical membrane filtration method.

    In the demineralization process, cations in the feed water are exchanged for hydrogen (H+) ions and cations are exchanged for hydroxyl (OH-) ions. The result is water. H+ + OH-OH → H2O. In general, demineralization IX systems are available in two-bed or mixed-bed configurations. Depending on the process conditions and the composition of the stream to be treated, the exact design and components of the demineralization system may vary from application to application, most demineralization systems will include the following components:

    One or more IX (ion exchange) columns

    Regenerate dosing system

    Chemical feed storage tanks

    PLC, control valves, and piping

    In the presence of water, minerals and salts dissociate into their constituent ions. These dissolved solids include negatively charged ions known as anions and positively charged ions known as cations, both of which are attracted to counter ions (or ions with opposite charges).

    The IX column contains a resin in which the ion-functional groups are bound. These functional groups loosely hold the oppositely charged ions by electrostatic attraction to each other. In the IX cycle, water containing dissolved ions is introduced into the resin. The ions in the solution will exchange places with the ions on the resin beads and attach to the functional groups of the resin, even though the resulting solution is drained away. IX occurs when the affinity of an ion for a functional group is greater than the ion already present. the specific ionic contaminant present will determine whether an anionic and/or cationic resin type is required.

    Demineralization systems are configured with some flexibility to best meet a variety of process conditions and purity goals. NEWater designs demineralization systems for customers considering factors such as feedwater variability, desired purity levels, system footprint, tolerance for ion leakage (especially sodium and silica), and chemical feed requirements.
