The Ultimate FAQ Guide for Dual Tank Water Softeners

At present, one of the most devastating water problems facing households, industries, and commercial enterprises is water hardness. For groundwater and surface water, water hardness is quite common. This is because the water is constantly in contact with soil and rocks rich in minerals such as calcium and magnesium.

The utilization of moderately or extremely hard water in domestic, commercial, or industrial applications bears distinct negative implications. To overcome the adverse implications, enterprises are resorting to water-softening systems. In this article, we look at dual tank water softeners, how they function, and why you need one.

Figure 1 Dual tank water softener.

What is a Twin Tank Water Softener?

A dual tank water softener is a high-efficiency water treatment unit made up of two mineral tanks and a single brine tank. Typical dual tank water softeners are primarily tasked with eliminating constituents responsible for causing water hardness. These are usually minerals such as magnesium and calcium. The presence of twin mineral cylinders, allows the double tank water softeners to continually function with minimal interruptions even during regeneration.

In recent times, the prominence of water softener systems has tremendously proliferated. They are unique water treatment systems that solve a unique yet very common water problem. Twin-tank water softeners are particularly revered for their high productivity, efficient utilization of water and salts, time preservation, and cost efficiency.

They are equipped with varying exchange capacities consequently allowing their application in households, commercial entities, and industries. When manufacturing water-softening equipment, we prioritize the quality of our construction material and user convenience when using the systems. Our dual tank water softeners are certified for their exemplary quality and we are an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer of comprehensive water treatment systems.

What Are the Advantages of Using Dual Tank Water Softeners?

One of the biggest criticisms leveled against single-tank water softeners is the disruption of water softening during regeneration. Twin tank water softeners simply provide a feasible solution to this problem. Once one of the resin tanks hits its optimal softening capacity, the other tank is called into action. This means that the system regenerates sufficiently while still supplying you with quality soft water.

Another chief benefit of using dual-tank water softeners is that they are quite efficient. They often initiate the regeneration process when absolutely needed i.e. not early and not late. The same cannot be said about single-tank water softeners.  Underneath, we highlight some of the other diverse advantages of twin-tank water softeners.

    • The supply of high-quality soft water is guaranteed at all times.
    • They regenerate automatically and hardly interrupt the in-service cycle.
    • When regenerating they only utilize soft water.
    • They are likely to last relatively longer compared to single-tank water softeners.
    • They are easy to operate and quite efficient.

Which Components Make Up a Twin Tank Water Softener?

Twin-tank water softeners, just like single-tank water softeners, consist of three essential parts, the resin tank, the control valve, and the resin tank. However, the twin-tank water softener has two resin/mineral tanks. Below, we are going to elaborate on each component and its respective role in the water softening process.

    ●       The resin tanks/cylinders.

The resin tank, also referred to as the mineral tank is a cylinder accommodating the resin beads, which substitute the hardness ions with less-objectionable Na+ or K+ ions. In dual-tank water softeners, there are two resin tanks. While one of the cylinders is being recharged, the adjacent tank takes up the task of softening your hard water. This ensures that you have an uninterrupted supply of soft water. Ideally, the water leaving the resin tank is soft water.

    ●       The control valve.

The control valve is simply the mechanical control unit of the dual-tank water softener. It keeps track of your water usage and regulates the water flow entering and leaving the mineral tanks as well as the brine tank. The control valve can be pre-programmed according to your exclusive specifications. For instance, the time to automatically initiate the regeneration process.

    ●       The brine tank.

The brine tank is a shorter vessel often placed next to the twin resin tanks. It holds the brine solution, which is used to regenerate the exhausted resin beads. Water softener systems are mainly regenerated using salt solutions (sodium or potassium). Blocks or pellets of salt are placed into the brine tank physically and they subsequently dissolve in the harbored water. After the control valve detects that the softening capacity of the resin is deteriorating, the brine is drawn from the brining vessel and passed through the resin beads in the resin tank.

How Do Dual Tank Water Softeners Function?

Dual or twin-tank water softeners expel hardness-causing minerals using the ion exchange process. They are made up of dual mineral tanks filled with resin beads charged with Na+ or K+ ions. The hard water is moved into the mineral tank and forced to penetrate through the resin beads. In the resin tank, the resin beads attract the divalent ions responsible for water hardness (calcium and magnesium).

The seized Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are subsequently replaced with sodium (Na+) potassium (K+) ions. The water exiting the resin tank is essentially softened water. The divalent ions are ordinarily substituted by twin Na+ or K+ ions so as to preserve electrical balance. After a while or after softening a specific quantity of hard water, the resin beads lose their softening capacity. This is primarily due to the excessive accumulation of hardness ions on the resin beads.

At this point, the control valve initiates the resin replenishing process in the exhausted mineral tank. The softening process in the adjacent mineral tank commences instantaneously while the other mineral tank regenerates. This makes certain that your supply of soft water remains uninterrupted and undiluted. Here is a quick video illustrating how a dual-flow water softener works.

What is the Difference Between Twin Tank Water Softeners and Single Tank Water Softeners?

The most visible difference between dual-tank water softeners and single-tank water softeners is the number of resin tanks. A single-tank water softener has a characteristic one resin tank while the twin-tank water softener is made up of two mineral/resin tanks. The utilization of dual resin tanks allows you to continually harvest soft water even during regeneration. When regeneration is initiated in one of the resin tanks, the adjacent resin tank continues to soften the water.

In single-tank water softeners, the softening process must be halted after a while to allow for resin regeneration. For most single-tank water softeners, the replenishing process is scheduled to commence at night when the demand for soft water is pretty low or non-existent. Additionally, dual-flow water softeners tend to be more efficient than single-flow softeners.

Dual-bed water softeners are also more likely and more equipped to last longer than single-bed water softeners. This is because they regenerate using soft water, which minimizes chances of scale-build and premature fouling of essential components. However, the two distinct water softeners share a number of similar traits. For instance, they have one brine tank and they both rely on control valves to automatically initiate the regeneration process.

How do Dual Tank Water Softeners Regenerate?

Regeneration is a replenishing process initiated periodically to restore the optimal softening capacity of the resin beads. In twin tank water softeners, the mineral tank with reduced softening capacities is regenerated while the twin tank continues to soften hard water. This eliminates the threat of interrupted water supply and makes water softening efficient. Beneath, we discuss the comprehensive regeneration process of water-softening equipment.

    ●       Backwash.

Debris and suspended solids found in the feed water are likely to be entrapped by the resin beads. The backwash process runs water through the resin beads thereby expanding the resin bed and allowing the trapped solids to be ejected. The water is technically forced into the mineral tank from the bottom and collected as wastewater at the top.

    ●       Brine draw.

The brine draw process sees the brine solution held in the brine tank transferred to the mineral tank. This process is automatically initiated by the control valve and flushing the brine solution through the resin beads, dislodging the entrapped calcium and magnesium ions while replenishing the resin beads with Na+ or K+ ions.

    ●       Slow rinse.

The slow rinse process commences immediately after the brine draw process is concluded. Clean water is essentially passed through the resin beads at a comparatively low flow rate. This augments the ion exchange process while also eliminating the surplus brine solution.

    ●       Fast rinse.

To finalize the regeneration process, fresh water is pumped through the resin beads in the resin tank at a comparatively faster flow rate. The freshwater is let through the resins until a specific water grade is attained. The video below walks us through the comprehensive regeneration process of a water softener for home tanks.

What is the Average Lifespan of Twin Tank Water Softeners?

Typical twin-tank water softeners have an average lifespan of approximately 10 to 15 years. However, the number of years your water softener system serves you depend primarily on the operational conditions and the quality of maintenance. A well-maintained twin tank water softener will comfortably last 15 years without lowering the quality of soft water generated or even decreasing its efficiency.

Poor maintenance will most likely lead to poor soft water quality and premature fouling. The regeneration routine should be undertaken according to the manufacturer’s instructions to mitigate untimely fouling. In addition, it is imperative for users to monitor and control the quality of water injected into the dual-tank water softener. This might include installing a sediment filter to remove suspended matter, which can clog the resin beads and lead to slower flow rates or even damage the resin bed.

Which Salt is the Best for Your Dual Tank Water Softener?

Twin tank water softeners generally rely on resin beads, which are replenished using salts or brine solutions to expel water hardness. Presently, there are varying types of salts manufactured specifically for water softener systems. Underneath, we are going to look at each type of salt and evaluate its pros and cons.

    ●       Solar salt.

Solar salt is primarily generated by evaporating seawater using natural sunlight. Typical solar salt has purity levels of approximately 99.9% and has a high solubility tendency compared to other salts. As such, it is mainly used in dual-tank water softeners with a history of salt clamping.

    ●       Rock salt.

Rock salt is primarily mined from underground reservoirs hence it is often associated with impurities like calcium sulfite. It is comparatively cheaper and often leads to clogging. When searching for a softener refill salt, avoid being fooled by the price tag.

    ●       Evaporated salt.

Evaporated salt is the purest type of water softener refill salt. It is mainly sold as cubes or pellets and its retail price is relatively higher. However, this should not put you off, given that evaporated salts have an extremely high solubility tendency and are free from other contaminants. The majority of manufacturers advise users to use evaporated salt.

    Back to the guide ⇪

What Quality of Water do Twin Tank Water Softeners Generate?

Dual tank water softeners simply generate soft water or product water with relatively low concentrations of calcium and magnesium. The soft water generated typically has a calcium carbonate concentration of 60 mg/L or below. The low concentration of hardness-causing minerals means that the water can be used in homes, industries, and commercial enterprises without worrying about scale build-up and reduced soap cleaning capabilities.

It is however imperative to note that water softener systems only extract hardness minerals and portions of iron (up to 5 mg/L). As such, applications utilizing feed water with varied compositions and concentrations of impurities, necessitate water softener systems and supplemental water purification systems. To ensure your twin tank water softener keeps producing high-quality soft water, you must practice proper maintenance routines.
