What is Reverse Osmosis and How Does It Work?

Reverse osmosis is a pressure-driven water treatment mechanism that alienates undesirable pollutants from water using semipermeable membranes. The technology is essentially the opposite of conventional osmosis. Hydrostatic pressure (approximately 150-800 psi) is ideally applied to the feed water consequently overpowering the osmotic pressure. This forces water molecules to stream from the highly concentrated solution to the less concentrated solution.

In reverse osmosis, the two solutions are separated by high-rejection RO membranes. These semipermeable membranes have perforations with an average size of 0.0001 microns. This allows for the seizure of fine pollutants like dissolved salts, bacteria, and viruses. The impurities blocked by the partially permeable membranes are ejected from the system as concentrate. Water molecules penetrate through the membrane pores and are harvested as potable water (permeate).

However, reverse osmosis is often integrated with other processes to protect the RO membrane elements and improve the filtered water quality. This is carried out in two phases; pretreatment and post-treatment. During pretreatment, the incoming water is filtered using sediment filters to eradicate turbidity and suspended substances, which can block the membrane pores. Other pretreatment processes that can be used include water softening, carbon filtration, and chemical dosing. The quick video below illustrates how a reverse osmosis membrane element functions.

Figure 2 Reverse osmosis membrane element outline.

What Are the Primary Uses of Reverse Osmosis Elements?

Reverse osmosis systems are unquestionably some of the most utilized and effective water treatment units. They are primarily used to separate objectionable pollutants from polluted water. Unlike the majority of other water treatment systems, reverse osmosis elements and systems eliminate an array of impurities. As such, they are exploited in almost every water purification application. Reverse osmosis elements are typically exploited in two ways; as standalone water treatment systems and as supplemental water treatment units.

Standalone RO systems are used to desalinate seawater, purify drinking water or generate potable water. Their deployment as supplemental systems is primarily in applications that necessitate purified and high-purity water. The operating conditions and specifications of distinct applications are always dissimilar. As such, reverse osmosis elements and equipment are typically customized to the industry’s requirements.

NEWater manufactures RO elements and systems based on their intended application. For instance, we have RO elements specifically designed for saltwater desalination, drinking water purification, and well water treatment among others. Irrespective of how unique your application is, contact us and we will provide you with a custom-made reverse osmosis element. Here are some possible applications of reverse osmosis membrane elements.

    • Seawater desalination.
    • Brackish water desalination.
    • Drinking water purification.

Which Types of Reverse Osmosis Membranes Are Used in Water Treatment?

Reverse osmosis water treatment primarily utilizes two types of RO membranes; thin-film composite (TFC) membranes or cellulose acetate (CA) membranes.

    ● Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes.

Thin-film composite RO membranes are partially porous membranes made of three integrated layers. The third layer is typically made of charged polysulfone or polyamide. Although thin-film composite membranes are not as resistant to chlorine as cellulose acetate membranes, they are more resourceful and efficient.

    ● Pros of TFC RO membranes.

    • They have high salt rejection scores.
    • Support varied temperatures (0-45°C).
    • Impeccable membrane flux.
    • They are quite long-lasting.
    • Their rejection of organics is impressive.

    ● Cellulose acetate (CA) membranes.

Cellulose acetate RO membranes are named after the material they are made from (cellulose acetate). They were the first types of commercial reverse osmosis membranes and are ordinarily categorized as asymmetrical membranes. Compared to thin-film composite membranes, they are more resistant to chlorine but their efficiency and productivity are relatively lower.

    ● Pros of CA membranes.

    • They are highly tolerant to chlorine.
    • Their purchasing price is quite inexpensive.

How Durable Are Reverse Osmosis Membrane Elements?

High-quality reverse osmosis membrane elements have a life expectancy of three years. However, the duration of an RO membrane element lasts depends on how it is used and taken care of. We recommend pretreating the feed water before passing it through RO membrane filters to prevent possible blockage and fouling. Sediment filters are perfect for this role given that they extract dust particles, grit, debris, and other suspended solids capable of clogging the membrane pores.

Another maintenance practice that is essential in prolonging the lifespan of RO membrane elements is periodic cleaning. Despite initially filtering the water to expel suspended solids, some constituents still find their way through. They amass on the membrane’s surface and can negatively impact the flow rate. Cleaning the membranes frequently dislodges these constituents, consequently revamping the membrane’s performance levels and extending its life span.

How Can You Protect a Reverse Osmosis Element?

Reverse osmosis elements are susceptible to fouling, clogging, and scaling if subjected to feed water containing aggressive impurities. Clogging is mainly caused by colloids, debris, and suspended solids while scaling is a consequence of filtering hard water. All these scenarios can be mitigated by adequately pretreating the feed water. Here are pretreatment solutions that can protect your RO element from clogging, scaling, and fouling.

    ● Chemical dosing.

Chemical dosing is essentially the process of administering chemical reagents to feed water with the aim of extracting specific pollutants. The popular chemical dosing processes today are antiscalant injection and chlorination. Chlorination involves administering chlorine into the water to kill microbial pollutants like bacteria and viruses. Antiscalant injection involves the addition of anti-scaling chemicals to eradicate hardness-causing minerals.

    ● Sediment filters.

Sediment filters are mechanical filters that trap debris, grit, sediments, and sand particles. They are principally deployed in water pretreatment and they prevent membrane clogging and fouling. In most instances, reverse osmosis systems are delivered with integrated sediment filters.

    ● Carbon filters.

Typical reverse osmosis membranes are easily damaged by chlorine and other chemicals found in water. Pre-filtering your feed water with carbon filters ensures that aggressive chemicals such as pesticides and chlorine are eliminated before they come into contact with the reverse osmosis element. Carbon filters also extract organic chemicals and ultimately get rid of awful odors and tastes.

    ● Water softening.

Water softening is the process of extracting hardness-causing constituents from water. Water hardness originates from calcium and magnesium minerals. When these minerals accumulate on metallic surfaces, they cause scaling, which can ultimately lead to irreversible damage. To remedy this, you can deploy a water softener system or use antiscalant injection.

What Quality of Water does Reverse Osmosis Elements Produce?

Reverse osmosis elements are water filtration units chiefly utilized to eradicate a myriad of contaminants. Their primary strength is the removal of dissolved solids and they can eliminate up to 99.7% of salts. They rely on high rejection membranes hence they typically extract most waterborne contaminants. The RO permeate, which is the final product, is essentially high-grade product water, which can be used in a range of industrial, domestic, and commercial applications.

The water is also graded as Type III laboratory grade water. This grade of water is characterized by TOCs levels of <200 ppb, and resistivity of >4 MΩ-cm. It is often used in non-critical lab applications, laboratory equipment cleansing, and media preparation. The content of dissolved solids and microbial pathogens is equally low.

However, quality is a subjective matter and whether the water is of the right quality, depends on the demands of the imminent application. The quality or grade of water generated by RO elements and systems can be improved by incorporating reliable post-treatment systems. For instance, the microbial count can be further shrunk by polishing the RO permeate using a UV water sterilizer.

Which Factors Can Affect the Functioning of a Reverse Osmosis Element?

The performance level and lifespan of a reverse osmosis element depend on numerous factors. The majority of factors are within your control while some are beyond your control. Underneath, we will be discussing the primary factors that may impact the functioning and performance levels of your reverse osmosis element.

    ● The quality of feed water.

Feedwater quality is usually graded according to the range and concentration of pollutants contained. High-quality feed water is characterized by low concentrations of impurities while low-quality feed water exhibits higher pollution levels. Filtering low-quality feed water can result in low-quality product water. It can also lead to premature fouling of the reverse osmosis elements. This can be mitigated by first pretreating the feed water to lower the range and concentration of impurities.

    ● The operating pressure.

Reverse osmosis is generally a pressure-driven technology. Pressure must be applied to the feed water to overpower the osmotic pressure. For typical RO systems, the recommended operating pressure ranges between 150-800 psi. High pressure increases the impurity rejection percentage but caution must be taken to mitigate membrane fouling. Your manufacturer should provide guidelines on the appropriate operating pressure.

    ● Temperature.

The operating temperature directly impacts the permeate flow rate and the retention coefficient. Higher temperatures translate into higher permeate flow rates while lower temperatures decrease the permeate flow rate. Temperature affects the permeate flux because it impacts the feed water’s velocity. Typical RO elements and units operate at 25º Celsius or 77º Fahrenheit.

    ● Percentage recovery.

Percentage recovery refers to the ratio/proportion of permeate flow rate subdivided by the feed flow rate and multiplied by 100. As long as the operating pressure, TDS level, and temperature remain unchanged, the percentage recovery stays inversely proportional to rejection percentage and the permeate flux. Ordinarily, the percentage recovery is regulated by flow restrictors.
