    How Does a Seawater Filtration System Work?

    Seawater filtration systems chiefly operate in three stages, pre-filtration, membrane-based filtration, and post-treatment. Filters in the pre-treatment chamber eradicate the large constituents such as seaweed, debris, and colloids from the seawater prior. This ensures that the membranes are safe from clogging and prevents the corrosion of the system’s equipment.

    Consequently, the filtered water is then pumped under high pressure into the semi-permeable membranes. The dissolved solids composed of dissolved ions and microorganisms that survived the pre-filters are alienated by the 0.0001 micron-sized pores of the membranes.

    The water collected is then post-treated to regulate the PH levels to match the desired water quality. The mineral composition is also adjusted especially if the water is meant for human consumption to mitigate dietary deficiency.

    Which Filtration Methods are Used in Seawater Filtration Systems?

    Reverse osmosis.

    Reverse osmosis is the most prevalent seawater filtration system and is revered for its effectiveness. RO filtration relies on osmotic pressure and perforated membranes to produce fresh clean water. It often has a desalination rate ranging from 97% to over 99%. Prior to forcing the water through the semipermeable membranes, the seawater is first pre-treated using filtration and chemical dosing.


    Similar to reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration uses perforated membranes to filter seawater and in turn generate potable water. Using hydrostatic pressure, the seawater is forcefully pumped through perforated membranes with pores measuring 103-106 Daltons. The pores eject dissolved salts, pathogens, bacteria, and viruses from the seawater thus producing safe and hygienic water.

    Nanofiltration relies on high pressure to force seawater through 0.001 micron-sized pores of semipermeable membranes. It is extremely effective in removing multivalent ions, recording a rejection rate of 99%. Its ability to eradicate divalent ions makes it ideal for softening hard water.
