In today’s article, our seasoned technicians will be walking you through some of the most advanced water filtration equipment; water filter resins, and their primary roles.

    Figure 1 Water filter resin

What is a Water Filter Resin?

A water filter resin is essentially a water filtration system that eliminates ionic pollutants through ion exchange. Technically, they are ion exchange systems that exchange objectionable ions with desirable ions rather than extracting them. Water filter resins are primarily made up of cation and anion exchange resins. However, the configuration of the resins can be different. The distinct exchange resins (cation or anion) can be deployed independently as is the case with cationic water softener systems.

Water filter resins have long been used in distinct water filtration applications. They are mainly used to generate deionized/demineralized water or soften hard water. Typical cation filter resins tasked with softening hard water are charged with sodium (Na+) ions while cation filter resins for water deionization are charged with hydrogen (H+) ions. Anion filter resins are predominantly charged with hydroxide (OH-) ions.

Some of their primary features such as size and exchange capacity are often customized to facilitate compatibility with different applications. Thanks to modern innovations, water filter resins are presently quite economical, extremely effective, and efficient. Get in touch with us today and we will provide you with a first-rate water filter resin custom-made for your exclusive application.

How Does a Water Filter Resin Function?

Water filter resins get rid of ionic impurities in a distinct way. Technically, they do not remove the dissolved ions. They simply exchange them for less objectionable ions in an elaborate process known as ion exchange. However, prior to the ion exchange process, the feed water is first pretreated using sediment filters to remove floating solids. Subsequently, the water is fed into a pressure vessel containing cationic resin beads.

For ion-exchange water softener filters, hardness-causing ions are eliminated by the cation exchange resin. The resin beads, which are essentially charged with Na+ ions, contain negatively charged active sites. Ordinarily, opposite charges attract hence the hardness ions (Ca2+ and Mg2+) are attracted to the anionic active sites. The sodium ions held by the cationic resin beads are subsequently discharged and they end up replacing the hardness ions to generate soft water. The underlying video illustrates how a water softener filter works.

In deionization water filters, the incoming water is first stripped off cationic impurities by the cation resin filter. Here, the less objectionable ions held by the resin beads are hydrogen ions (H+). After all objectionable cations have been stripped off, the water is then passed through the anion exchange resin. Here, anionic impurities such as nitrate, sulfate, and chloride are exchanged for hydroxide (OH-) ions consequently producing deionized/demineralized water. The quick video underneath illustrates how a deionization water filter functions.

What Are the Different Types of Water Filter Resins?

Essentially, water filter resins are divided into two categories; cation resin filters and anion resin filters. Cation resin filters are further subdivided into strong acid cation resins and weak acid cation resins. Anion resin filters on the other hand are subdivided into strong base anion resins and weak base anion resins. Here is a brief description of the distinct types of water filter resins.

    ·         Cation resin filters.

    Cation resin filters are simply ion exchange resins charged with positive non-objectionable ions. Cation resin filters in water deionizer systems are ideally charged with hydrogen (H+) ions while those deployed in water softeners are charged with Na+ or K+ ions. Cation resin filters are further divided into;

    ·         Strong acid cation (SAC) resins.

Strong acid cation resins are cation resin filters charged with strong acidic solutions. They are primarily used to soften water, deionize water and purify water. They support all pH ranges (0 to 14) and can tolerate extremely high temperatures (100-120 degrees Celsius). For optimal deionization, they are often integrated with weak acid cation resins.

    ·         Weak acid cation (WAC) resins.

Weak acid cation resins are cation filter resins whose functional groups are made up of carboxylic acid. Their ideal pH is 7-14 and they are mainly used in de-alkalization, partial water softening, and partial demineralization. WAC resin filters are typically replenished using hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid.

    ·         Anion resin filters.

    Anion resin filters are water filter resins charged with hydroxide (OH-) ions. They are made up of a polymeric matrix attached with distinct functional groups. They are further subdivided into;

    ·         Strong base anion (SBA) resins.

Strong base anion resin filters are mainly used for desilication, TOC removal, and demineralization. They are categorized as acrylic, Type 1, Type 2, or macro-porous. Each sub-category is designed to perform distinct roles. They also support all ranges of pH (0-14).

    ·         Weak base anion (WBA) resins.

Weak base anion resin filters lack exchangeable ions. They are recharged using sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, or ammonia. WBA resin filters have functional groups made of amine. They are often combined with strong base anion resin filters to facilitate optimum deionization. However, they are not ideal for extracting carbon dioxide and silica.

What is the Composition of Water Filter Resins?

Water filter resins are generally manufactured from polystyrene polymers. However, the different types of water filter resins are differentiated by the engrained functional groups. A water filter resin consists of beads with electrically charged sites. Below, we will be looking at the basic components of a resin water filter and their primary roles.

    ·         Exchange resin.

The exchange resin is undoubtedly the most pivotal component of an ion exchange water filter. It is characteristically a microporous bed of resin beads that are essentially supersaturated with an appropriate solution. Typical water filter resins comprise anion and cation exchange resins.

    ·         Inlet faucet.

The inlet faucet is a distribution system that feeds raw water into the water filter resin. The type of inlet faucet used and as well as the arrangement may differ depending on the configuration of the water filter resins.

    ·         Regenerant distributor.

The regeneration distributor is a supply system that draws the regeneration solution from the brine tank to the pressure vessel holding the ion exchange resins. In automated systems, the regeneration distribution system is synchronized with the metered PLC controller to permit automatic regeneration.

    ·         PLC control unit.

    The PLC control unit is a computer-like control board used by the user to run the water filter resin. The control unit can be programmed to automatically launch regeneration once the exchange capacity depreciates significantly. Other components include;

    • Retention elements.
    • Control valves.
    • Outlet distribution systems.

What Are the Chief Application Fields of Water Filter Resins?

Water filtration systems have provided a plausible remedy to the hard-hitting effects of water scarcity in the past decades. As water undersupply rages on, the prominence of water filters proliferates as the affected households, industries, and businesses seek alternative water sources. The demand for water filter resins has similarly risen due to the increase in the exploitation of water polluted by minerals and metals.

Presently, the known application fields of water filter resins range from household water softening to industrial water deionization. These unique filters are often utilized in pretreatment, primary treatment as well as post-treatment. The primary roles accomplished by water filter resins are water purification, demineralization, desilication, water softening, and de-alkalinization.

NEWater’s resolve to sufficiently gratify the demands of prospective buyers from all walks of life has inspired us to manufacture varying types of water filter resins. These water treatment systems are tailored to the demands of specific industries, water purification needs, and production demands. Underneath are some of the reputable sectors currently benefiting from contemporary water filter resins.

How Are Water Filter Resins Regenerated?

Water filter resins exchange undesirable ions with less objectionable ions. Over time, the objectionable ions exhaust the resin beads tasked with softening or deionizing the incoming water. As a result, the resin filter losses its optimum exchange capacity resulting in the depreciation of filtered water quality. For this reason, water filter resins necessitate regeneration to replenish the exhausted resin beads.

Regeneration is simply the process of flushing out the trapped objectionable ions and consequently recharging the overwhelmed resin beads. To effectively recharge the resins, comprehensive regeneration must be undertaken. Ordinarily, this entails four essential processes; backwashing, regeneration administering, slow rinsing, and final/fast rinsing.

    ·         Backwashing.

Backwashing is a cleansing exercise undertaken by flushing clean water through the resins to eliminate trapped solids. The water is forced through the resin bed from the bottom of the pressure vessel. This suspends the bed allowing for the removal of trapped impurities.

    ·         Administering the regenerant.

Consequently, the regeneration solution (acidic or basic) depending on the type of resin filter, is administered into the ion exchange column. This is primarily undertaken at a slower flow rate to permit full contact. For mixed-bed filter resins, the cationic and anionic resins are first alienated before the regenerant is administered.

    ·         Slow rinse.

Slow rinse is an essential process also referred to as regenerant displacement. Dilution water is run through the resins at a slow flow rate to displace the excess regenerant.

    ·         Fast rinse.

Comprehensive regeneration is concluded by running clean water through the IX column at a fast flow rate. This ensures the resins are fully recharged and that there is no excess regenerant.

Which Pollutants Are Eradicated by Water Filter Resins?

Resin filters are purposely designed to remove dissolved ionic pollutants from water. They achieve this by simply substituting the undesirable ions with non-objectionable ions. The majority of inorganic compounds break down into ionic elements, which can be exchanged for less objectionable ions.

Water filter resins designed for water softening extract hardness-causing minerals i.e. magnesium (Mg2+) and (Ca2+). Additionally, they extract mild traces of iron (Fe2+). The removal of ionic impurities is essentially undertaken by the cation and anion resin filters. Underneath is a table indicating the varying types of ionic impurities eradicated by water filter resins.

Anion water filter resins Cation water filter resins.
    Bicarbonate (HCO3-) Iron (Fe2+)
    Sulfate (SO4-) Magnesium (Mg2+)
    Chloride (Cl-) Sodium (Na+)
    Nitrate (NO3-) Potassium (K+)

Which Factors Should You Consider When Purchasing Water Filter Resins?

Water filter resins are generally highly-rewarding water treatment systems. However, to reap the optimum fruits, it is imperative that you procure the right water filter resin for the right application. The underlying excerpt summarizes some of the key factors that will guide you into purchasing the best and most feasible water filter resin.

    ·         The range and concentration of impurities in your feed water.

Different water filter resins are tailored to extract specific pollutants. Establishing the concentration and composition of your feed water will help you understand what you are dealing with. Consequently, you can purchase a filter resin custom-made to solve your respective water problem.

    ·         The demands of your application.

Seek to understand the quality and quantity of filtered water your application/enterprise demands. For applications regulated by oversight authorities, ensure that you understand the quality of water needed and if there are any certifications needed.
